why do some dogs lift their leg to pee?

I adopted my pup..he was 3 years old and going to be put down...because the old lady who had him just didn't want a grown dog...he is the most loveable puppy....and he lifts his leg...I cant get him to stop!

the reasen bieng i think is cause the male dog cocks his leg in order not to piss on his leg .. but then us bastard humans come alond whip em to the vet an have the dicks ripped off to stop em havin pupps! .. then when its time to take a waz .. it just trickles out of em like it would a female ... *G
